Pixellot & Monetization – Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL)

With the popularity of sports, athletes at competitive levels have unique marketability. An athlete’s performance and personal brand can influence large audiences. This exposure and reach makes athletes valuable assets to companies and organizations looking to promote products or causes. Recently, however, the power is shifting to the players.

Name, Image, and Likeness Legislation in America

Throughout the United States, the era of athletes building their own NIL brand and capitalizing on their platform is fully underway. NIL deals allow athletes to directly profit through exploring business opportunities around their personal brand.

While premium universities and athletic programs offer exposure, many schools cannot replicate that. For generating content and showcasing talent, Pixellot’s end-to-end video solutions can help.

Before discussing Pixellot’s monetization capabilities for athletes, let’s get a quick look at the history of NIL legislation.

NIL timeline

  • October 2019: NCAA announces that it will allow college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness, with the caveat that it must be “in a manner consistent with the collegiate model.”
  • April 2020: NCAA announces that it will form a working group to study the issue of name, image, and likeness and develop recommendations for how it should be implemented.
  • May 2020: The US Senate Commerce Committee holds a hearing on name, image, and likeness, with NCAA President Mark Emmert testifying.
  • January 2021: The US House of Representatives passes the Student-Athlete Equity Act, which would give college athletes the right to profit from their name, image, and likeness.
  • April 2021: The US Senate passes the College Athlete Economic Freedom Act, which would give college athletes the right to profit from their name, image, and likeness.
  • June 2021: The NCAA announces that it will allow college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness starting in August 2021.

NIL deals empower athletes tremendously. The top deals provide income greater than professional salaries for some student athletes. However, athletes of this caliber are rare — the vast majority of student athletes will never profit from the sport they love. This is where the brand-building of Pixellot’s video solutions comes into play.
